Description

The Practical Audio-Visual Chinese 2nd edition has been developed by the Ministry of Education of ROC, updated from “Practical Audio-Visual Chinese”, edited and written by the Editing and Compiling Committee of National Taiwan Normal University. The new version comprises a large-scale revision with regard to content, issue, lexicon, and up to date ways and practices.

Meanwhile, the five major objectives of teaching this second language are designed to echo international Chinese teaching trends. These are incorporated within the teaching materials so that learning Chinese should no longer so difficult. It is thus considered to be the benchmark and practical learning material for domestic and overseas Chinese. This textbook includes the following features:

The contents have been revised under the 5C’s. Whilst, suggestions from previous version users have been adopted.

The book focuses on non Chinese speakers and helps to train with basic pronunciation skills and regular vocabulary of learners.

Through systematic guidance, and practical day-to-day conversation, it helps learners to achieve fluent speaking and barrier-free communication, as well as appreciating the characteristics of Chinese culture.

Each textbook consists of text (dialogue), characters (vocabulary) with usage, grammatical patterns with practices, application activities, a short article (story) and notes (annotations).

All the vocabulary, word, and example sentences are employed with the use of Mandarin phonetic symbols (MPS), Chinese Pinyin, and Universal Pinyin so as to enhance readers’ diversified recognition and reading.

Learners using this book can acquire language skills in modern Chinese, from listening and speaking to reading and writing.

The book is found in 5 volumes, including, teacher’s manual, student textbooks student’s workbook as well as a supplementary phonetics CD (MP3).

The first volume contains 12 lessons, providing students with fundamental pronunciation, syntax, and day-to-day vocabulary to enable them to achieve the fundamental objective of conversing in Chinese. Each lesson includes Dialogue, Pinyin, MPS, an English translation, Narration, Vocabulary (and usage), Syntax practice, Application activities, Notes.

After completing this text, learners should have learned approximately 314 Chinese characters, 449 vocabulary words and 50 grammatical patterns.

Author Introduction:
 
National Taiwan Normal University Mandarin Training Center was founded in 1956 and is a government-recognized center for teaching Chinese as a foreign language and an extension program of the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). Since that time, it has grown to become the largest and best known institution in the Republic of China dedicated to the teaching of Chinese culture and Chinese as a second language. All levels of standard and Classical Chinese as well as Chinese culture are taught here.
